Santa Fe Springs CA

Ben Montelius, 97, Santa Fe Springs, CA passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2013. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church, Norwalk, CA on Friday, August 16.

Ben was born February 8, 1916, to Benjamin Harrison and Rose Ella (Smart) Montelius at Springfield, MO.

On January 23, 1951, Ben was united in marriage to Ardith Allene Bolles in Alhambra, CA, the daughter of Robert Elijah and Lucy (Weaver) Bolles of Drew, MO. They lived their life together in the Santa Fe Springs area.

On December 28, 1958, they were blessed through adoption with a son, Marcus Timothy Montelius. Marcus and former wife, Marcia, presented Ben and Ardith with five grandchildren…Marcus, Matthew, Miles, Morgan and Megan. Thereafter, the family was referred to as the M&Ms.

Ben was very active in the community, in the YMCA Y’s Men’s organization, his church, and with Ardith, travelling extensively internationally to Y’s Men’s Conventions and study through the Elderhostel programs.

Ben held many jobs through his life in the health care industry, primarily as a Physical Therapist, retiring from Norwalk State Community Hospital. Ben proudly served his country in the Army-Air Corp during World War II.

Ben and Ardith attended many Bolles Reunions across the country, hosted the 17th reunion in Los Angeles/LaMirada in 1994, and participated in the Bolles Tour to England in 1995. At the Reunions, Ben graciously gave shoulder massages, and he was an expert at reciting special poems. One requirement at reunions was finding an ice cream parlor for a cone.
